My Approach

My Approach to Successful Personality-Driven Radio

My strategy focuses on collaborating with the team and developing the following foundational elements:

  • Unique, fun plot

that can’t be duplicated anywhere else and that reflects who’s on the show.

  • Rich and rewarding storylines

    that listeners crave.

  • Relatable characters

the audience cares about and roots for.

  • The right images

to positively affect the perception of the show, which in turn affects ratings and revenue.

  • Fresh, original features

that activate another occasion in PPM ratings.

Sounds simple, but nailing these takes plenty of discussion, energy, and vulnerability.

The Essential Nature of Kick-Ass Content

I also help teams make better content choices, and I teach them how to develop the content differently from other shows so that the listeners keep coming back for more.

The Wheel of Content® & The Scorecard®

To assist with all this, I’ve developed two content strategy tools (for clients only).

  • The Wheel of Content

helps shows develop fun, innovative ideas from the very best topics each day—ideas that inspire listeners to tune in again and again out of fear of missing out.

  • The Scorecard

is a simple prep and evaluation tool that helps shows put together a program each day and then judge it against five key strategic areas—areas that will make the show Fun, Authentic, Innovative, and Relatable in each break. (What I refer to as being FAIR to be GREAT.)

Going Way beyond the Comfort Zone

If you want to have a show that’s consistently relevant, fun, and different, then everyone needs to let go of the status quo and the same ol’, same ol’. Think about it: if you’re in a long-term relationship and you continually do the same old things—same dates, same meals, same vacations—it gets boring fast. And listeners might leave to check out another show. Same is true with listeners. Yes, trying different and daring things that serve the plot can be uncomfortable (at first!). But I get the talent to lean into the discomfort, and I show them how exciting and fulfilling getting out of their comfort zone can be.
